At The Bar
Deb and Jacob are the founders, owners and brewers of Eden Brewery, Mittagong’s very own and first hand crafted, independent brewery with cellar door, creating a wide range of fresh and unique beers.
Eden Brewery has been built on the foundation that craft breweries ought to be a positive in the local community as well as the world at large and this is why they are committed to donating 10% of all their profits to Oxfam towards providing clean drinking water to underdeveloped societies. It’s why they’ve have chosen to use 100% green renewable energy in their brewery, being environmentally responsible in every way they can.
This is where the name Eden comes in – a reclaiming back of beer to its roots, being a means of community, serving those it was made for, being fresh, local and honest.
SUNSHACK CIDER & BEE MEAD
Winemaker brothers, Anton and Mark Balog of Artemis Wines began making wine in the Southern Highlands in 1996. Anton & Mark are also the creators of two exciting new beverage ranges:
Sunshack Ciders are made with love in Mittagong, using only the finest apples and pears, and pure water from Artemis’s own sandstone spring, they’re a perfect to share with good friends and good times. They harvest only the finest Granny Smith apples and Williams pears from select High Country orchards. The fruit is crushed into pulp then fed into the basket press which presses all the juicy juices out then cold-fermented to retain all the natural apple and pear flavours. According to the brewers the best way to enjoy is in a tall glass over ice to experience mouth-filling pure fruit flavours, perfectly balanced with a medium-to-dry sweetness, fine acidity and refreshingly crisp finish.
BEE Mead is Australia’s first sparkling mead, a honey beverage loved by Gods, Vikings and common folk alike. It’s refreshing and easy-to-drink, the perfect match for your next Game of Thrones-inspired evening or some particularly fine opera.
In the Kitchen
Where would Australia be without the CWA! Let’s face it, the CWA is a national icon, a living treasure that passes from generation to generation not only delicious recipes but a wonderful, very tangible and very valuable support network of girl power that is without peer. Formed in 1922 when country women were fighting isolation and a lack of health facilities this resourceful group set up baby health care centres, fund bush nurses, build and staff maternity wards, hospitals, schools, rest homes, seaside and mountain holiday cottages – and much more. The women of the CWA have, and continue to be, initiators, fighters and lobbyists. They have made localities into communities by providing social activities and educational, recreational and medical facilities.
Many of us have on our bookshelf or in a kitchen drawer, a copy of that stalwart of the Aussie kitchen, The Country Women’s Association Cookbook. So who better to turn to than our local CWA Ladies for a splendid Afternoon Tea for our matinée concert. Jennifer Bowe, President of Moss Vale Branch and of the Wollondilly CWA Group rounds up her team to once again serve up up a treat not to be missed.
